Reades of Aldeburgh
Role: Planning and Building Regulations
Scope: Listed Building, Redevelopment
Client: W C Reades
W C Reades’ (building contractors) premises were for many years a prominent landmark on Aldeburgh High Street in Suffolk. Following a change of ownership, proposals for the conversion of the site to residential use were prepared by OWL Architects and 13 apartments were eventually granted planning consent. The existing buildings on the site were Grade II Listed and comprised a number of industrial units and an original town house. The character and materials of the existing buildings were retained and a number of detail features reconstructed. A key component of the client’s brief was maintaining as many sea views as possible and this was achieved by implementing roof viewing lanterns and hidden balconies.
